This Apple Learning Professional Development online course uses a step-by-step learning process specifically designed for K-12 teachers. The course is interactive, with many opportunities for offline work and written response. Your work in this course focuses on the production of practical and useful educational projects that can be used in your classroom, and that can also be used to demonstrate what you have learned.
Although this course is self-paced, you are not alone. Other educators who share your interests are taking this course at the same time. Your first task is to...
Collaborate:
Go to the course forum by clicking the link to the right or at the bottom of the page. There you will find a folder called "Who Are the People in Our Neighborhood?" Go to this folder and post a message telling about yourself. While you are there, read the postings of fellow participants to get an idea of who is taking this course with you.
Course Objectives
AppleWorks 6 101 prepares you to use the tools included in AppleWorks:
- word processing to produce text documents
- spreadsheets to organize and graph numerical information
- databases to create and organize text information
- drawing and painting to create illustrations and illustrated documents
- presentations to create slide shows
By the time you finish this course, you will be able to use each of these tools to produce documents for your classroom. You will produce a portfolio that includes a number of projects that demonstrate your new skills along with journal entries that reflect on what you've learned and how you plan to use AppleWorks in your classroom. Your portfolio can be used to demonstrate your learning.
Prerequisites
This is a beginner's course so no extensive computer knowledge is necessary. However, you will need to know how to:
- use a mouse (click and drag, open and close documents, open and close windows and applications)
- name and save documents
- find documents that you have saved
- start up your Internet connection and navigate to the online courses
Tools
You need to have access to a computer with an Internet connection, a printer, and the AppleWorks 6 program fully installed. You should be able to keep your Internet connection and AppleWorks open at the same time. (If you can't, you will need to print instructions as you move through the course.) You will need access to this computer for the approximately 30 hours it takes to complete this course.
Projects

- spreadsheet: a simple two column spreadsheet with formulas and graphs
- database: a class database including names, addresses, and phone numbers
- drawing: a map of your classroom or school
- painting: a picture demonstrating your use of all painting tools
- presentation: a slide presentation introducing a new topic to your students
- combination of document types: a description of how you intend to use each AppleWorks document type in your classroom
