Welcome to iMovie 101, the course that teaches you how to create your own original movies using iMovie and your Macintosh computer. You will learn how to plan and shoot video clips, how to create and edit sound clips, then how to put your entire movie together in the order you want with transitions and titles. iMovie is designed for beginners, but is also useful to more accomplished users. If this is your first time working with video on your computer, have no fear. This course will help you create your movie in a step-by-step manner.

Course Objectives
iMovie 101 teaches you how to use iMovie to create digital videos. You will learn how the software works and how to use it. By the time you finish this course, you will be able to:

  • explain how iMovie works.
  • plan and prepare the elements for a short video.
  • create your own sound files.
  • bring video clips from your DV camera into your Macintosh using FireWire.
  • edit video clips.
  • arrange video clips, sounds, titles, and transitions into an iMovie time line.
  • export your movies to tape or QuickTime format and use them in presentations.
As you accomplish these objectives, you will build a portfolio of documents and video examples that demonstrate what you have learned. This portfolio may serve to show that you have met the course objectives.

Prerequisites
iMovie 101 is a beginners' course on video editing. To be successful in this course, you should be comfortable with the following:

  • how to use the mouse, manage multiple windows, open and save files.
  • how to create, save, and print word processing documents.
  • how to use QuickTime files, and the basics of how QuickTime works.
The ASDO courses Intro to iMac and QuickTime 101 may help you to gain some of these prerequisites.

Tools
This course requires certain, very specific hardware and software tools. It is very important that before starting the course, you have assembled in one place the following:

  • An Apple Macintosh iMac DV,G3, or G4 computer with a built-in FireWire port.
  • Mac OS 8.6 or later.
  • QuickTime 4.0 or later.
  • At least 2 gigabytes of free space on your hard disk.
  • At least 128 megabytes of Random Access Memory.
  • iMovie software installed on your computer.
  • A DV camcorder or video deck compatible with your computer. Note: for the latest information on DV cameras and compatibility, visit the iMovie web site.
  • A FireWire cable to connect the camera or deck to the computer.
  • At least one DV cartridge that fits your camera or deck.
  • A robust connection to the internet, such as provided through an Ethernet connection, DSL, or cable modem.
You will need access to these tools for the approximately thirty hours it will take to complete this course.

Projects
As you work your way through this course, you will create several projects that practice and demonstrate what you are learning. These include:

  • a short test iMovie.
  • a list of ideas and elements for your course movie.
  • a storyboard for your course movie.
  • at least two digitized video clips.
  • three versions of your completed movie.
  • a final iMovie incorporated into a presentation.
The course includes step-by-step instructions on how to build each project from scratch. You will provide your own content for the projects, so that they can fit exactly the kind of work you do. The projects begin simply, and become progressively more complex as you proceed through the course. Each project, when published, becomes documentary evidence of what you have learned in the course.
